Do you work from photographs?

Yes. Much of my work is from photographs because some people are not comfortable posing, some people do not have the time to pose, and some cannot pose due to distance constraints.

How many photographs do you recommend?

I usually ask for six different photographs. This gives me a better vision of the subject since cameras tend to distort the image somewhat.

Why do you ask for six photographs?

I will use your six (five, four, three) photographs to create an original oil portrait and not a copy of a photograph.

Do you only work in oils?

No. I also work in charcoal.

My oils start at $800 -- 16"x20" -- for a head study.
My charcoals start at $250 -- 18"x22" -- for a head study.

Do I get to see and approve the portrait before it is finished?

Yes. I will work with you to finalize the pose and composition, and I will work with you during my painting process until my final coat of varnish.

Does your price include shipping or sales tax?

No. Shipping will depend on size and weight and will be discussed during the early exchange of ideas.

I have a wedding coming up in two weeks and would like to present an oil portrait as a wedding gift. Any suggestions?

Yes, a gift certificate.
I have prepared a gift certificate for the husband who wanted something special for their first anniversary. He explained to his wife that she could expect paper (the traditional first anniversary gift) on that day.
I have prepared a gift certificate for  an oil portrait as a wedding gift from one brother to another.

Do you offer framing?

No. There are many outstanding framers available and I am unable to match their inventory and their skill.  But I do recommend an excellent local source in Lombard, Wheaton, and Downers Grove, IL, called Carlson. They do all my measurements and framing.
